It is especially important to re-gear your Jeep or truck before installing 35’s or higher. If you do not re-gear you run the risk of pre-maturely burning your transmission as well as causing excessive motor wear. You will also experience a lack of performance in the motor. Re-gearing your Jeep or 4x4 Truck is very important if you plan to hit the trails.
Unsure of what size gears you need? We can help with this. For example, it is practical to re-gear to a taller setup to increase your top speed and fuel economy, however if you are planning to do a lot of off-roading or are only upgrading to larger tires, you should install shorter gears. At Chucky’s Off-Road we can help you decide which set of gears is going to be most beneficial for your use depending on your plans for tire upgrades.
What do gears do? The factory-installed gears in your Jeep of 4x4 Truck are designed to fit the ratio and the torque of the package installed by the manufacturer. “Gearing” itself refers to the number of teeth in your ring and pinion gears. This number is a measurement of how many times your driveshaft has to rotate in order to spin your wheels one time. Driveshafts connect to the axle shafts on your pinion gears. When your drive shaft rotates, the pinion gear spins the ring gear which then will spin your axle shafts to make your vehicle move. For example, a standard gear ratio is typically 3.21. This means that your driveshaft would have to turn 3 ¼ times for your wheel to turn one time. 4.10 gears means that the driveshaft rotates over 4 times to get your wheels to turn, and so on.
Why re-gear? Upgrading to larger tires alters the fuel efficiency and safety of your Jeep or 4x4 Truck, therefore your gear ratio needs to reflect this change. If you choose not to re-gear and you install larger tires and wheels, it will negatively affect performance and drastically slow down your vehicle. You will need to choose the new gears based on the diameter of the new tires. Still unsure about what size gears to switch to? That is no problem, at Chucky’s Off-Road we can help you determine what gear ratio you need.
